WASHINGTON, D.C. — Today Congressman David Wu released the following statement after learning that the General Services Administration (GSA) has selected a new centrally located site for the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (CIS) office that serves the Portland region:
“Today the General Services Administration announced that they have secured a location for the Citizenship and Immigration Services office that is within Portland’s central business district. I fought for years for this outcome, and today’s announcement is a win for not just CIS’ clients and staff, but for our whole city.
Portland is home to a widely dispersed immigrant population with a widely divergent set of needs. In order to adequately fulfill its mission, the CIS office needed to be easily accessible those who seek its services from all parts of greater metropolitan area.
By remaining in the central business district, CIS will be able to appropriately serve its core governmental function in a location that is integrated with—rather than isolated from—the many other resources in the heart of our city.
Generations of Portland leaders have fought to build and maintain the city’s unique collection of centrally located services. Today we have another victory on behalf of that ideal. This concludes a long and arduous process. Now we can look forward to seeing CIS located in a site that promises to be convenient, accessible, and updated for both CIS' clients and staff.”
