FATTAH SUPPORTS ROAD MAP – HOPES FOR GREATER COMMITMENT TO PEACE

WASHINGTON, DC -- Congressman Chaka Fattah (D-PA) today applauded Secretary of State Colin Powell and the Bush Administration for its road map for peace in the Middle East.  The road map is a collaborative proposal by the United States, European Union, United Nations and Russia.

“This road map is a shared effort for real and lasting peace,” said Congressman Fattah.  “For this blueprint to be truly effective, we must have full cooperation by both Palestinian Prime Minister Mahmoud Abbas and Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon.”

“The Palestinians must demonstrate their commitment to peace by moving aggressively to stop the violence that has consumed the region.  As is laid out in the road map, Israel must end recent settlement activity and withdraw militarily from Palestinian areas,” said Congressman Fattah.  “For the peace process to begin anew, this effort requires an end to suicide bombings and other attacks targeted at civilians.”

Congressman Fattah believes that if the United States makes a public commitment now for a lead peacekeeping role in the Middle East -- including troops -- it would speed up the date of a lasting and just agreement between the Israelis and Palestinians.
