CARNEY: JEFFERSON SHOULD RESIGN

“This is not about partisan politics; it is about upholding strong ethical standards”

June 4, 2007

Washington, D.C.—After learning of the Federal indictment against Congressman Bill Jefferson (D-LA), Congressman Christopher P. Carney has called on him to resign.  “I came to Congress with a promise that corruption should not be tolerated from either party. This is not about partisan politics; it is about upholding strong ethical standards. Congressman Jefferson should resign.”

Congressman Carney continued, “I was extremely disappointed to hear that another Member of Congress is indicted on such serious charges, but this is not something that we can take lightly. Congressman Jefferson should uphold his oath to serve the people and rightfully step down. A Member of Congress under serious indictment does not belong in the United States House of Representatives.

“It is my hope that this situation with Congressman Jefferson can be resolved quickly and judiciously. However, given the serious allegations and ethical issues the indictment presents, I call on Congressman Jefferson to resign from the U.S. House of Representatives.”
