CARNEY WORKS TO TIGHTEN BORDER SECURITY

Leads bipartisan Homeland Security Delegation to inspect and tighten border

May 9, 2008

Washington, D.C.—Congressman Carney, Chairman of the House Homeland Security Subcommittee on Management, Investigations and Oversight, is leading a Congressional delegation to the U.S-Mexico border to evaluate our nation's security.  This is Carney's second trip this year to focus on securing our border and examining the technology.

"Border security is national security, and as Chairman of the House Homeland Security Subcommittee on Management, Investigations and Oversight, I have made securing our borders a top priority," said Carney.

Congressman Carney is reviewing Project 28, to determine if the electronic surveillance system has improved since his trip to the border in January. He was joined by the Chief Aguilar, Chief of the U.S. Border Patrol and Customs, and Border Protection Officers, to see what more can be done to keep our officers safe and our border secure.

"I am committed to seeing Project 28 up and running to secure our borders. Mistakes with Project 28 have cost taxpayers millions of dollars, this is unacceptable. As a fiscal conservative, I am committed to fighting government waste, while making our country safer," said Carney. Carney, a Lt. Commander in the U.S. Navy Reserve, has a background in counter-terrorism and has taken a leading role on the House Homeland Security Committee in securing our borders.
