CARNEY: TAX CUTS FOR VETERANS

Introduces Bipartisan Legislation to provide a 2% income tax cut for Veterans

March 14, 2007

Washington, D.C.—Congressman Christopher P. Carney has introduced bipartisan legislation providing a 2% income tax cut for veterans who have served 90 days or more in a combat zone. “Our soldiers have sacrificed for us and they deserve nothing less than our full support. This bill will say to them that the 110th Congress acknowledges the special hardships they face and that this nation has a moral obligation to provide for their needs,” said Congressman Carney.

“I came to Congress with a promise to do more for our troops and military families back home. Our troops have made huge sacrifices for their country—we need to do more to show our appreciation. This tax cut is a good first step to provide economic opportunity and stability, both for our troops and for their families,” said Carney.

The legislation, HR 1403 and HR 1404 were introduced with Congressman Todd Platts of Pennsylvania as the Republican original cosponsor. HR 1403 will provide for a 2% income tax cut for all veterans who have served 90 days or more in a combat zone, not to exceed $2,000 for any taxable year. The tax deduction does not apply to those service members who receive a dishonorable discharge. HR 1404 provides tax relief for active duty service members and Guard and Reservists on training status.
