Rep. Pitts: Energy Tax Bad Idea to Begin With, But a Terrible Idea During a Recession

Tax will pinch consumers and kill jobs

Washington- Congressman Joe Pitts (PA-16) released the following statement today after Rep. Henry Waxmen (D-CA), Chairman of the House Energy and Commerce Committee, and Rep. Edward Markey (D-MA), Chairmen of the Energy and Environment Subcommittee, released a “discussion draft” of cap and trade legislation.

“Even proponents of cap and trade legislation—including President Obama—acknowledge it will raise the price of energy for consumers.  At a time when families are struggling to make ends meet, increasing the cost of everything from commuting to work, to heating your home, or fixing dinner in the oven is a terrible idea.

“This legislation will kill American jobs at a time when we should be focusing on ways to create jobs.  An energy tax, like this legislation, will do nothing but prolong our recession and hinder our efforts to get the economy back on track.”
