    <title><![CDATA[Congress Extends Unemployment Benefits ]]></title>

Kennedy and Jim Langevin voted again today to provide an additional 20 weeks of unemployment benefits for more than 4,000 Rhode Islanders, who have exhausted their current benefits. H.R. 3548, the Worker, Home Ownership and Business Assistance Act of 2009, extends unemployment insurance benefits in every state by 14 weeks, with an additional 6 weeks in high unemployment states like Rhode Island. The legislation had been held up in the Senate after originally passing the House in September.

H.R. 3548, the Unemployment Compensation Extension Act of 2009, once enacted, will help approximately 2,500 Rhode Islanders who are projected to run out of unemployment compensation by the end of September. It will also help the nearly 4,500 Rhode Islanders who will exhaust their benefits before the end of this year.
