Langevin to Negotiate Final 9/11 Bill

(Warwick, R.I.) Congressman Jim Langevin (D-RI) today was named a conferee to H.R. 1, the 9/11 Commission Recommendations Act. The House passed H.R. 1 in January, as part of the Democrats’ First 100 Hours agenda. Over the coming weeks Langevin and his fellow House conferees will meet with their Senate counterparts to draft the final version of the legislation.

“As we reach the final negotiations on this critical bill, we are getting back on track to fully implement all of the recommendations made by the bipartisan 9/11 Commission,” said Langevin, a member of the Homeland Security Committee. “I am proud that I have been chosen by my colleagues to help craft the final outcome of this bill – a bill that is so important to the future security of our nation.”

The 9/11 Commission provided an objective and eye-opening assessment of how terrorists were able to exploit our security vulnerabilities on September 11th and made 41 key recommendations to address these shortcomings. Completing this conference report will shore up remaining vulnerabilities and implement recommendations that have been ignored completely or only partially addressed until now.

Langevin will continue to advocate for the development of interoperable communication systems for first responders, the strengthening of global non-proliferation programs and the 100 percent screening of all cargo, among other things.

“The best way to honor those who died on September 11th is to learn from the lessons of that tragic day,” continued Langevin. “Finishing this conference report will bring us much closer toward achieving that goal.”
