Langevin Statement on Airline Terror Plot

(Warwick, R.I.) Congressman Jim Langevin (D-RI), member of the House Homeland Security Committee, today offered the following statement regarding the uncovering of a terror plot to bomb planes bound for the United States from Britain:

“We stand ready to offer any assistance necessary to our British friends. This morning’s developments serve as a reminder of the continuing threat of terrorism faced not only in this country, but around the world. Thanks to the swift and professional work of American and British authorities we have undoubtedly saved thousands of lives.

“I will continue to monitor this situation and have been in contact with authorities at T.F. Green. In the meantime, I urge all Rhode Islanders, especially those traveling, to remain ever vigilant. The threat alert status for commercial aviation within the U.S. has been upgraded to Orange alert, and increased security measures have been implemented at both domestic and international airports.  I am confident that Homeland Security officials will continue to evaluate the situation and take any necessary and appropriate action."

“Going forward, we must make sure we are paying appropriate attention to air travel in an effort to make it as safe as possible. I will also continue to advocate for dedicated funding for air cargo screening as well as money to ensure that our citizens are better prepared.”
