WASHINGTON - Congressman Henry E. Brown, Jr. (SC) recently received an index card with a drill bit attached to it, stating only, “WE MUST DRILL NOW!” from a constituent in McClellanville, a town who’s shrimpers are currently paying more than $4.50/gallon to fuel their boats. After receiving the note, the Congressman offered the following remarks:
“This is what all of my constituents and almost 75% of Americans have been saying. Gas prices have become unaffordable and we must move to increase environmentally responsible domestic energy production. I strongly believe that if we do not invest in American energy resources such as additional refining capacity and allowing more nuclear power to come on-line, the price we all currently see at the gas pump will have nowhere to go but up.”
Brown, a long time supporter of an “all of the above” energy policy of increasing domestic energy resources while expanding conservation and renewables continues to urge his colleagues, Republican and Democrat alike, to join him supporting legislation in lowering the price of gas and setting our country on a path to less dependence on foreign energy.
The following is a list of bills that Congressman Brown is currently a cosponsor of and/or has signed a discharge petition on:
• H.R. 3089, No More Excuses Energy Act of 2007
The bill reduces the price of gasoline by opening new American oil refineries; investing in diverse energy sources such as wind, nuclear, and clean coal-to-liquid technology; and making available more homegrown energy through environmentally sensitive exploration of the Arctic Energy Slope and America’s Deep-Sea Energy Reserves.
• H.R. 2279, Expand American Refining Capacity at Closed Military Bases
The bill reduces the price of gasoline by streamlining the refinery application process and by requiring the President to open at least three closed military installations for the purpose of creating new and reliable American refineries.
• H.R. 5656, To Repeal the Ban on Acquiring Alternative Fuels
The bill reduces the price of gasoline by allowing the federal government to procure advanced alternative fuels derived from diverse sources like oil shale, tar sands and coal-to-liquid technology.
• H.R. 2208, Coal-to-Liquid Fuel Act
The bill reduces the price of gasoline by encouraging the use of clean coal-to-liquid technology to enter into projects that will produce innovative transportation fuel.
• H.R. 2493, Fuel Mandate Reduction Act of 2007
The bill reduces the price of gasoline by removing fuel blend requirements if they contribute to unaffordable gas prices.
• H.R. 6107, American Energy Independence and Price Reduction Act
The bill reduces the price of gasoline by opening the Arctic Energy Slope to environmentally sensitive American energy exploration, which would be limited to 0.01% of the Refuge. Revenue received from the new leases would be invested in a long-term alternative energy trust fund.
• H.R. 6108, Deep Ocean Energy Resources Act of 2008
The bill reduces the price of gasoline by enabling the United States to responsibly explore its own deep ocean to produce American energy. The bill would grant coastal states the authority to keep exploration 100 miles from their coastlines and it would also allow states to share in the revenues received.
As the Representative for more than 75% of South Carolina’s coastline, Brown has advocated for the environmentally responsible exploration of the intercontinental shelf for the past several years.
