WASHINGTON, DC – Congressman Henry E. Brown, Jr. (SC) praised President Bush for his decision today to lift an executive ban on offshore drilling. Brown, long a proponent of increasing domestic energy production to alleviate high prices and bridge the gap to the next generation of energy solutions, made the following statement in response to the President’s announcement:
“I commend the action of President Bush in lifting the executive ban on offshore drilling. This is a good ‘first step’ in changing the course to address our nation’s energy challenge. However, Congress still needs to act and remove current Congressionally-mandated restrictions on offshore exploration as part of an ‘all of the above’ solution for meeting America’s energy demands. I call upon my Democratic colleagues to schedule a vote on removing those restrictions soon.”
Recent polling shows that two-thirds of Americans support increased, environmentally-safe domestic energy production – both in deep ocean energy zones and on remote federal lands – as part of an ‘all of the above’ solution to our nation’s energy and national security challenge. Congressional Republicans, led by Congressman Brown and other members committed to energy solutions have proposed such a comprehensive plan to address high consumer prices and market tensions. Through combining serious conservation measures with environmentally responsible development of domestic energy resources, America can meet its energy challenge while moving forward to the next generation of power sources.
