Washington, DC – Representative Gresham Barrett (SC, 3) is proud to have a special opportunity to honor our D-Day veterans in commemorating the 60th Anniversary of World War II. The Third Congressional District and the State of South Carolina are aware of the sacrifices that the members of our military have made throughout our nation’s history to safeguard the rights and freedoms guaranteed us as Americans, and we are greatly pleased about recognizing our heroes at our Upstate D-Day 60th Anniversary Ceremony. “When I think of the sacrifices our veterans made while serving our great nation, I am humbled. It is always a privilege and honor for me to pay tribute to the men and women who courageously defended our freedoms by sacrificing their lives for the principles on which our nation was founded,” said Barrett.
Barrett is partnering with neighboring Representative Jim DeMint to honor and present “World War II D-Day Commemorative Medals” to eligible Normandy veterans or next of kin from the combined districts included within South Carolina’s 13 counties (Greenville, Spartanburg, Union, Laurens, Pickens, Oconee, Anderson, Abbeville, Greenwood, McCormick, Saluda, Edgefield and Aiken).
The awards can be applied for through all local Veterans Affairs Offices as well as local VA medical facilities and nursing homes. Applications should be mailed to Congressman DeMint’s Greenville office at 300 East Washington Street, Suite 101, Greenville, South Carolina 29601 by Monday, April 5, 2004. WWII memorabilia and military vehicles will be on display, and representatives from the National D-Day Memorial Foundation in Bedford, Virginia and the National D-Day Museum in New Orleans will be in attendance.
Congressman Barrett would like to personally invite all area veterans to attend the ceremony being held at the BiLo Center in Greenville on Sunday, June 6th, 2004 at 3:30 in the afternoon. For further information, please call Caroline Schroder in the Anderson district office at (864) 224-7401 or Jeff Holt in Congressman DeMint’s Greenville office at (864) 232-1141.
