Clyburn Commends Microsoft-Thurgood Marshall Scholarship Fund Partnership;South Carolina State University to Benefit

(Washington, DC) - House Democratic Caucus Vice Chair James E. Clyburn (SC) today commended Microsoft for partnering with the Thurgood Marshall Scholarship Fund to launch a Technology Initiative to improve IT resources on the 45-member public Historically Black College and University (HBCU) campuses including South Carolina State University.

“As an active alumnus of South Carolina State, I know the need that exists at these publicly-supported HBCUs,” Congressman Clyburn said.  “Budgets are extremely tight in these difficult economic times, and there is not enough money to invest in state-of-the-art computer technology.  I applaud the Thurgood Marshall Scholarship Fund and Microsoft for recognizing the importance of insuring minority students are not left behind in this technology driven economy.”

The Congressional Black Caucus was instrumental in developing this partnership as part of its ongoing support of HBCUs.  The five-year, $100 million Technology Initiative will begin with a $15 million Microsoft grant to replace outdated or non-existent software to Thurgood Marshall Scholarship Fund (TMSF) members.  TMSF will then manage the training of faculty, staff and students on the features and uses of the software and provide Help desk assistance.

“This visionary initiative will equip tomorrow’s minority graduates with the technical skills necessary to successfully compete in this shrinking economy,” Congressman Clyburn said.  “This partnership is a meaningful solution to bridging the digital divide that has plagued minority communities.”
