| (Washington, DC) - Today the House passed the Energy and Water Appropriations Conference report signaling the victory of a joint effort between Congressman Jim Clyburn and Congressman Henry Brown to repair Charleston’s aging wastewater infrastructure.
Recognizing the immediate needs of Charleston CPW’s wastewater treatment system, the two Congressmen worked together to include language authorizing $5,000,000 for repairs and maintenance. Authorization language for Charleston CPW was twice included in the Water Resources Development Act that was approved by the House but never taken up by the Senate.
During the crafting of the appropriation bill, Congressman Brown garnered support for the provision from the Authorizing Committee, while Congressman Clyburn, who sits on the House Appropriations Committee, ensured that the authorizing language was included in the final bill.
“Charleston’s need to replace its aging wastewater treatment system has become critical,” Congressman Clyburn said. “Congressman Brown and I joined forces to insure this situation was addressed as quickly as possible. This joint legislative success will translate into better service for Charleston area residents.”
“I’m glad Congressman Clyburn and I were able to work together to make this authorization possible,” said Congressman Brown. “Residents of Charleston in both districts pay the highest wastewater rates in the nation. This provision makes it possible to provide more immediate relief and to reduce the rates in the future.”
