Orangeburg-Wilkinson Art Student’s Work to Hang on Capitol Hill

(Washington, DC) - Recent Orangeburg-Wilkinson graduate Jerry Summers’ artwork Self-Portrait will be displayed on Capitol Hill as the winner of the 2004 6th Congressional District Artistic Discovery high school art competition.  The vibrant prismacolor pencil drawing will be hung in the underground corridor that connects the House of Representatives office buildings and the U.S. Capitol.  This is the route that Members take on their way from their offices to the House Chambers.

“Jerry shows extraordinary talent in the detail and depth of his drawing,” Sixth District Congressman James E. Clyburn said.  “His Self Portrait will be a striking addition to the Artistic Discovery display, and will represent the 6th District well.”

As the 6th Congressional District winner, Jerry, and his art teacher, Alvin Staley, will attend an awards ceremony on in Washington, DC with other district winners later this summer.  They will also get the opportunity to spend several days exploring the nation’s capitol.

This is the eighth time in its nine year history that a student from Orangeburg-Wilkinson High School has won the 6th District competition.  The other winners this year are Maudie Weaver of Hannah Pamplico High School and Marco Keitt of Orangeburg-Wilkinson. Their artwork will be displayed in the Congressman’s district offices for one year.
