June 25 – Congressman Zach Wamp and members of the House Nuclear Cleanup Caucus aggressively worked to defeat an effort that would have taken $2.6 billion away from our nation’s Environmental Management Program. The Administration has already underfunded environmental cleanup programs in next year’s budget, and further cuts would have undermined the base budget levels that Zach has worked so hard to stabilize for the last 15 years. Congressman Wamp actively fought with his caucus colleagues before the issue came to the floor of the U.S. House of Representatives to preserve the funding necessary to meet the current missions of the Oak Ridge Reservation, clean up the lasting legacy of the Cold War and move our country forward.

June 9 – The Veterans Administration repaired a deteriorating building on the VA’s Alvin C. York Campus after Congressman Zach Wamp visited the Murfreesboro facility. Zach is the lead Republican on the House subcommittee that oversees the VA and when he saw that the structure was in disrepair, he immediately asked the VA to make the necessary renovations to improve the building. Our veterans often travel long distances to receive medical care and deserve to be treated in adequate facilities. These exterior repairs were part of a major renovation project to modernize and upgrade the facility and improve productivity. The Alvin C. York VA medical center is part of the VA Tennessee Valley Healthcare System and provides veterans from across Tennessee with primary, surgical and psychiatric health care services.

The sun had just come up and as I looked at the Vietnam Memorial, there was a man standing against the wall etching a name onto a piece of paper. The proposed ‘Cap and Tax’ bill would make our nation less competitive, cause electricity rates to ‘skyrocket’ and could cost a lot of people their jobs. This is a regressive penalty that hurts those on a fixed income the most. We can meet the country’s growing demand for energy and be responsible stewards of the environment through technology and innovation, without a sweeping tax and regulatory scheme. If we are going to seriously address these challenges, we need to renew our commitment to an all-of-the-above energy strategy that includes nuclear energy and advances conservation and alternative energy initiatives.

April 29 – Congressman Zach Wamp voted against the “Hate Crimes” legislation that passed the House of Representatives on Wednesday. Following is his statement:
“Violence against any innocent person is wrong, regardless of that individual’s race, religion, nationality or sexual orientation. Every jurisdiction in the United States prohibits battery and murder. All crimes of violence should be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law. If we prioritize crimes based on the victim’s status, we threaten the very notion of equal protection under the law that is the foundation of our legal system. Instead, all violations of the law should be dealt with in a manner that delivers justice on behalf of victims and their families.”
