April 28 - The Jetsons cartoon made many of us think that the car of the future would soar through the air as we fly to our destination. But not many of us would have guessed that the only thing about today’s vehicles that would soar is the cost to keep the tank full of gasoline. Rising fuel costs are bearing down on our nation’s economy and are hampering economic recovery. The more money people have to spend on gasoline, the less they have to spend on other goods or services.

To help turn the tide of this growing obesity epidemic, Congressman Zach Wamp is cosponsoring the Physical Activities Guidelines for Americans Act of 2008, which would require the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) to prepare and promote physical activity guidelines at least every five years, similar to the dietary and nutritional guidelines.

March 4 - The economic stimulus package that Congress passed last month means that many Americans will receive tax rebate checks this year. Congressman Zach Wamp and 17 of his colleagues in the U.S. House of Representatives have urged that the rebate checks be used to invest in energy conservation and renewable energy products to save money, stimulate the economy and reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

February 27 - For the fourth time in less than two years, the Democrat leadership in the U.S. House of Representatives held a vote to raise energy taxes. Congressman Zach Wamp opposed the Renewable Energy and Energy Conservation Tax Act of 2008 because it includes a roughly $18 billion tax increase on American energy:

February 26 - One of the major concerns I had about the Medicare prescription drug benefit when I opposed it in 2003 was that Medicare costs were already soaring. The legislation was too broad, favored the pharmaceutical companies over needy seniors and didn’t include safeguards to keep costs down. Despite these concerns, Congress ultimately expanded the program and created new benefits that have caused Medicare costs to skyrocket even further.

February 15 - The American people have to make difficult financial decisions to live within their means, and they expect their leaders in Washington to do the same. February is the month when Congress begins its budgeting process for next year. The president's budget request is merely a starting point; Congress has no binding obligation to follow it. It is simply the beginning of a discussion about how to better prioritize spending and impose some discipline while still meeting the most pressing needs of our country.

February 13 - After a late January vote of the City Council of Berkeley, Calif., to advise the Marine Corps recruiting station that Marine recruiters are “not welcome in this city,” Congressman Zach Wamp signed on to the Semper Fi Act of 2008. The bill, which was supported by 71 other Members of Congress, would rescind more than $2 million in federal funding for Berkeley and transfer the funds to the Marine Corps. Mounting pressure from this resolution along with widespread criticism from around the country convinced the City Council to reconsider the earlier vote. Around 1:00 a.m. last night, the Council voted to clarify the Marines motion with new language recognizing the Marine Corps’ right to be located in the city.

Internships provide many opportunities to learn how government works and how a Congressional office serves the public.
