November 10 – A veteran’s medals tell a story of service to our country for the cause of freedom. Many men and women wear the medals received during their military career to express patriotism on Veterans Day, which is a reminder of the sacrifices made for our democracy. One of the highest privileges I have as a Congressman is honoring veterans who have served in the Armed Forces of the United States. It has been an amazing experience to meet veterans throughout Tennessee’s Third Congressional District and help them receive the medals and recognition they earned.

Congressman Zach Wamp met Thursday with the National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA) Administrator Thomas D’Agostino to discuss the Nuclear Posture Review and plans to modernize or modify the nuclear weapons complex. Zach continued to stress the need for NNSA to build a Uranium Processing Facility (UPF) at Y-12. UPF is essential for supporting weapons reliability and nuclear nonproliferation activities. As the Uranium Center of Excellence, Y-12 is a world leader in safe handling of nuclear material.

From what I have seen, areas of Hamilton County look very similar to how they did six years ago when we achieved 100-year-flood status. This is a serious event, particularly for those who have been forced from their homes, and I will continue working with state and local authorities to make sure our neighbors receive the support they need to get back on their feet. September 17 – Congressman Zach Wamp voted to cut all federal funding for ACORN, formally known as the Association of Community Organizations for Reform Now. Earlier this week, he sent a letter to President Obama with 133 other House members asking for the president to use executive authority to publicly disclose and terminate all funding to ACORN and its affiliates. The organization has been at the center of corruption controversies for years, including 70 convictions of voter fraud in 2008 and recent reports of employees facilitating prostitution. Since 1994, the organization has received more than $53 million in direct federal funding and likely substantially more through federal block grants.

September 15 – It’s in our country’s economic, energy and national security interests to enrich uranium domestically for clean nuclear power generation. Congressman Zach Wamp discussed the national assets and missions at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory and the Y-12 National Security Complex with U.S. Department of Energy Deputy Secretary Daniel Poneman, who recently visited Oak Ridge. Zach emphasized again the importance of the USEC loan guarantee to create the world’s leading enrichment facility for civilian power and the need for the National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA) to build a Uranium Processing Facility (UPF) at Y-12. As the Uranium Center of Excellence, Y-12 is a world leader in safe handling of nuclear material. Congressman Wamp also stated his support for commercial nuclear power, which is necessary to meet the growing demand for electricity and reduce emissions while leading the world in energy technology.

September 15 – Our nation faces many challenges, including the need for health care reform, rising unemployment and runaway spending. Congressman Joe Wilson of South Carolina publicly apologized for his emotional outburst during President Obama’s speech last week and the President has publicly accepted it. The President of the greatest nation in the world should be treated with respect, especially by an elected leader at a joint session of Congress. But it is time for Congress to set the political bickering aside and move on to a constructive debate of the important issues facing the American people.
