HOUSE MEMBERS ASK PRESIDENT TO CLARIFY HEALTH CARE MANDATES

August 5 – Congressman Zach Wamp and 34 other House members have asked President Barack Obama for clarification on whether the Democrats’ health care proposal would use taxpayer dollars to fund abortions. Without an exclusion written into the legislation, abortions would be federally funded under a government run health plan and millions of pro-life Americans would be forced against their conscience into private health insurance plans that pay for abortions.

“President Obama’s relentless effort to expand abortion funding threatens the progress our nation has made to reduce abortions,” said Congressman Zach Wamp. “Pro-life Americans do not want to be forced to purchase a health care plan that funds a practice they find abhorrent.”

The health care reform proposal in the U.S. House of Representatives would mandate individuals and employers purchase a set of minimum health care benefits determined by an independent commission. Without excluding abortion in the final bill, the commission could order private insurers to cover abortions and force taxpayers to foot the bill.

“We need to make changes to our health care system to lower costs and make coverage more accessible to all Americans, but a government takeover of health care that forces Americans to go against what they believe is the wrong approach. The President needs to be very clear with the American people and reverse his policies of expanding abortion funding. The Constitution protects life and we must continue fighting to protect all innocent life from conception forward,” Wamp said.
