January 10 - Pakistan plays a critical role in the struggle against Islamic extremists. Bordered by Afghanistan, the country is a battleground for competing ideologies between the moderates who seek tolerance and peace, and the fundamentalists who turn to violence in their quest for a global Islamic state. We must empower the moderate voices in Islam to stand against the fundamentalists and their hate-filled ideology. It is those brave souls, like that of my late friend Benazir Bhutto, who died trying to save her country from the threat of radicalism, that can and will defeat this threat. I urge President Pervez Musharraf to work towards real reform and true democratic government and for moderates, like Bhutto, to continue to demand peace and freedom for all.
