| Washington, DC: Congressman Kenny Marchant was sworn in by House Speaker J. Dennis Hastert on Tuesday, January 4, marking the opening of the 109th United States Congress. The newly-elected U.S. Representative took the oath of office on the House floor of the U.S. Capitol along with 39 other incoming freshmen and 395 incumbent legislators. Congressman Marchant is one of seven new members of the Texas delegation in the U.S. House of Representatives.
"I look forward to representing the people of the 24th District in Washington, D.C.," said Marchant. "Protecting the interests and values of this community is a tremendous responsibility, which I gladly accept."
The 24th Congressional District, which Marchant represents, encompasses portions of Dallas, Denton, and Tarrant counties. The new Congressman said his key goals for the 109th Congress include ensuring proper support for Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport, securing government money for local highways and roads, and working towards balancing the federal budget.
A staunch Republican and supporter of President Bush, Marchant served in the Texas House of Representatives for the previous 18 years. During his tenure in the Texas House he acted as Chairman of the State Affairs Committee, Chairman of the Financial Institutions Committee, and the Chairman of the House Republican Caucus. Prior to his election to the Texas House of Representatives in 1986, he served as Mayor and Councilman for the city of Carrollton.
Marchant and his wife, Donna, reside in Coppell and have four children and one grandchild. He is a graduate of R.L. Turner High School and has both a Bachelors Degree and Honorary Doctorate from Southern Nazerene University. Marchant is the owner and operator of a Carrollton investment company and is active in local charities, supports educational scholarships, and assists area churches through the Marchant Family Foundation.
