CONGRESSWOMAN JOHNSON RECEIVES PERFECT VOTING RECORD SCORE FROM THE AMERICAN ASSOCIATION OF UNIVERSITY WOMEN

Washington, D.C. - For the second year, Congresswoman Eddie Bernice Johnson has received a score of 100% from the American Association of University Women (AAUW) based on her voting record in the first session of the 110th Congress. The AAUW rated Members of Congress on several votes during the 110th Congress pertaining to college cost reduction, science, technology, engineering, mathematics, education, minimum wage, hate crimes, family planning and civil rights.

“The issues championed by the AAUW are ones about which I feel very strongly. I will continue to champion legislation that improves equality, education, health care, and the quality of life for residents of the 30th District of Texas," said Congresswoman Johnson. "I am proud to have received this distinction from the American Association of University Women.”

Since 1881, the AAUW has advocated and promoted legislation and societal change to further the cause of gender equality through education and community action. The group currently represents more that 100,000 members and 550 higher education institutions across the country.

Congresswoman Johnson is known to be a leading proponent for women’s issues. A recent National Academies report, "Beyond Bias and Barriers: Fulfilling the Potential of Women in Academic Science and Engineering", found that women repeatedly face biases in academia in the science fields, and that these barriers to success discourage them from careers in these areas. In response, Congresswoman Eddie Bernice Johnson introduced the Gender Bias Elimination Act (H.R. 3514) on September 10, 2007.

This important piece of legislation directly addresses concerns raised in the National Academies report by authorizing workshops that educate university department chairs, agency program officers, and others on reducing and eliminating gender bias for women in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) fields. Under this act, agencies that fund scientific research, including the National Institute of Health and the National Science Foundation, will also be directed to better enforce existing federal anti-discrimination laws (including Title IX), assess workplace climate, publish demographic and funding data for grant applications, and extend grant support for researchers on leave for caregiving duties.
