Inslee announces Head Start funding for Snohomish County

July 2, 2009

U.S. Rep. Jay Inslee (D-Wash.) today announced that the Edmonds Community College Snohomish County Head Start and Early Head Start program will receive $302,560 in federal funds toward program improvements and a cost-of-living allowance. The program serves 540 children at 11 sites throughout Snohomish County.  The money is made possible by the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) and is disbursed by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.

“This grant will ensure that Snohomish County’s children in the Head Start and Early Head Start programs learn in small classes, in up-to-date facilities,” said Inslee, a father of three boys.  “I am pleased to see the recovery package continue to help teachers and students in the 1st Congressional District and throughout Washington state.”

Quality improvement funding for the Edmonds-based program will go to staff development and facility improvements. The site itself will receive some much-needed renovations, including the installation of new floors in two classrooms and the construction of three new playgrounds.  These upgrades will make sure Head Start and Early Head Start students learn in modern, safe facilities.

The rest of the funding will help the program avoid cutting workers’ hours, salaries, and health insurance benefits. In addition, funding will allow the program to provide healthy and environmentally-friendly food choices for the students.
