Larsen will Bring Local Concerns to Committee Mark Up Next Week
June 19, 2009
Washington, D.C. — On Monday, June 22, U.S. Rep. Rick Larsen (WA-02) will host transportation roundtables in Everett and Mount Vernon to hear from 2nd District stakeholders and transportation leaders as the Transportation and Infrastructure Committee moves forward with writing the next major surface transportation bill, which will shape federal policy and invest in local transportation needs for the next six years.
Larsen serves on the Highways and Transit Subcommittee which is responsible for writing the bill. This week, Transportation and Infrastructure chairman Rep. Jim Oberstar (MN-08) released a blueprint for the legislation which the Highways and Transit Subcommittee will mark up on Wednesday, April 24.
Chairman Oberstar’s blueprint includes:
- $450 billion for the nation’s roads, highways, bridges
- $50 billion for high speed rail
- Investments to create or sustain approximately six million jobs over the next six years
“Transportation investments create jobs and economic opportunity,” said Larsen. “During the past year, I have met with local leaders from across the 2nd District to get ready to write this major transportation bill, invest in our roads, bridges, transit, and create jobs.
“Now it’s go time,” Larsen continued. “Chairman Oberstar’s blueprint was released this week, and I will be working hard to make sure we get the best possible bill for the 2nd District and Washington state.”
