"I think it's great that high school students have the opportunity to come to Washington D.C. and see first-hand the inner workings of government," said Smith. "As a Tyee High School student, I came to D.C. as part of the Close Up program and it gave me such a greater understanding of our country's history and an appreciation for our democracy."

Megann Anderson is participating in the week-long Presidential Classroom for Young Americans program, which brings approximately 300 students nationwide to Washington D.C. to meet with government officials and learn public policy issues. Anderson is one of only three Washington state participants.

Anderson and Smith discussed Smith's assignment to the National Security Committee, which has jurisdiction over local bases McChord and Fort Lewis. "My guiding principle on that committee is ensuring that the men and women serving our country enjoy a high quality of life," explained Smith.

Anderson also brought up school overcrowding, which she sees every day in the Puyallup School District. Smith said he recognized the problem and is working to remedy it. "I have co- sponsored legislation to help local school districts build new schools and modernize existing schools," he said. "I am hopeful that before this Congress adjourns at the end of the year, we will have passed legislation to make sure that students have a facility conducive to learning."

Anderson returns home to Puyallup at the end of the week.
