Congressman Adam Smith's Response To The State Of The Union Address

February 4, 1997"I really appreciate the President's emphasis on education. To meet the challenges of the next century, we need a well-educated population. I strongly support enacting high standards for our students and teachers, making early childhood education more accessible, and providing opportunities for college education, job retraining, and skills training.

"The most important point the President made tonight was his emphasis on working together in order to solve our country's problems. We all agree that we need to balance the budget, reform education, and change our campaign finance system. In order to meet those goals, the President and Congress have got to compromise and work together.

"I hope that as a moderate Democrat, I can be someone who helps bring the two sides together. The people of this country want common-sense, pragmatic leadership to move forward and solve some problems. I am very encouraged by the President's speech tonight, and I look forward to working with him and other members of Congress."
