| May 18, 1998 - In
response to today's formal filing of a lawsuit against Microsoft, Washington
state Congressman Adam Smith said that the Department of Justice is imposing
unprecedented requirements on the software company which will choke leap-ahead
innovation and result in lower quality products for consumers.
"Leap-ahead technology always creates temporary ‘powerhouses' in an industry. In the 1970's and early 1980's, we all thought IBM would be the computer leader forever. Then Microsoft came along with new inventions and eclipsed IBM." said Smith. "The high-technology industry moves so fast that products become quickly outdated. Today's Pentium computer is tomorrow's dinosaur, and the government harnessing this type of industry will simply strangle innovation." Furthermore, said Smith, it is unprecedented for the Department of Justice to intercede on behalf of one particular company in this manner. "Forcing Microsoft to put Netscape in its system is like forcing Burger King to sell McDonald's fries with a Whopper," he said. "This is just another example of the Department of Justice trying to control the high-technology industry. Intervening on behalf on one particular company is wrong; we should just let competition reign." |
