Washington -- U.S. Representative Barbara Cubin (R-WY) announced today the date and time of a town hall meeting she requested for the citizens of Granite Canon to discuss the impending closure of the towns’ lone Post Office.
“The people of Granite Cannon deserve the opportunity to have their voices heard on a post office closure that will significantly impact their daily lives,” Cubin said. “I am pleased my meeting with the USPS has led to a forum where citizens will have their questions answered and their comments heard.”
The United States Postal Service (USPS) will host a public meeting on September 27, 2007 from 6:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at the Cheyenne Main Post Office (details below). Postal representatives from the Cheyenne Post Office, as well as the CO/WY District office, will be on hand to answer questions, provide information and discuss how the community could best be served.
Rep. Cubin met with the USPS Manager of Customer Service Operations Fred Hintencach last week in an effort to fully vet the process that occurred in calling for the closure and called for a town hall meeting where locals could voice their opinions and concerns. Rep. Cubin has been working closely with USPS officials since February in an attempt to clarify the reasons for the “emergency suspension” that closed the post office and possible alternatives.
In 2004, the Granite Canon Postmaster resigned leaving citizens of Granite Canon with an unmanned post office that was served by a highway contract route carrier, who was still able to provide basic services such as package pick-up. Then on February 13 of this year, patrons of the Granite Canon Post Office were notified that their post office was being discontinued under an “emergency suspension” and that their new service would be through Cluster Box Unites (CBU) beginning February 28th. Many citizens of Granite Canon were unhappy with this decision, the insufficient notice patrons received and the lack of public input that went into the closure and the placement of the CBU’s.
“I will continue to work with the Granite Canon community and USPS to try and provide an open discussion to the current arrangement,” Cubin said. “It is imperative that rural areas have access to the same postal services as those in large cities and I will always fight to make sure that the opinions of my fellow Wyomingites are heard.”
