Cubin Hammers Democrats’ Budget

Washington -- U.S. Representative Barbara Cubin (R-WY) issued the following statement today after House Democratic leaders unveiled their Fiscal Year 2008 budget proposal, which calls for the largest tax increase in American history:

"Republicans have long believed that money is best spent by the hard-working Americans who work to provide for their families.  Unfortunately, House Democrats do not seem to share this vision.  The budget they have proposed today amounts to the largest tax increase in American history.

"This budget proposal increases taxes on working families.  Republican tax cuts passed in 2001 and 2003 will not be renewed and hardworking Americans will see their tax bill dramatically increase.

"Those tax cuts saved 65,000 married couples in Wyoming from the dreaded ‘marriage penalty’ tax.  Those same tax cuts have allowed 50,000 married couples and single parents in Wyoming to save money by increasing the child tax credit from $600 to $1000.  The same tax cuts also allow 39,000 Wyoming taxpayers to benefit from the reduced tax rates on capital gains and corporate dividends.

"As a Member of Congress, I take very seriously my duty to be a wise steward of America’s tax dollars.  I am committed to balancing the federal budget without raising taxes.  Failing to do this will burden our children with either a massive tax hike or a massive cut in entitlements.  I certainly hope Democrats will come to the table and work with us on a budget that keeps America prosperous and competitive."
