Cubin Cosponsors Constitutional Amendment to Control Spending |

Washington -- Today Representative Cubin joined many of her Republican colleagues in cosponsoring a Constitutional Amendment designed to control wasteful spending, which has become quite the habit in Washington. The Spending Limit Amendment would prohibit federal spending from growing at a pace faster than our economy, except for times of war. The projected growth of federal spending—both mandatory and discretionary—is simply unsustainable, and it threatens the standard of living of our children and grandchildren. “The Constitutional Amendment I cosponsored today makes sure the federal budget does not grow faster than American families’ abilities to pay for it. There is no better time than Tax Day to tell Congress to follow the same common sense principle Wyoming families live by every day: live within your means,” Cubin stated. “Something must be done to rein in the unlimited spending habits of Congress, and I think the Constitutional Amendment offers a great solution. The Spending Limit Amendment checks Congress’ proclivity of overspending, and ensures fiscal discipline that is desperately needed,” Cubin continued. The amendment would also require a “supermajority” vote, or two-thirds majority support, to override the spending limit. By capping spending so that it does not exceed 20 percent of the Gross Domestic Product, the Constitutional Amendment offers a ceiling, not a floor to federal spending. “Of course, I would love to see federal spending far lower than this, but this ceiling is a step in the right direction,” Cubin added. If passed this year, the Spending Limit Amendment would be effective for fiscal year 2010. “Unrestrained spending leads to higher taxes. If Congressional Democrats get their way, they are going to wreck your budget to fix theirs. If families in Wyoming can live within a budget, there is no reason Congress can’t do the same exact thing,” concluded Cubin.
