Today, I spoke on the floor of the House of Representatives in support of the National Uniformity for Food Act, which sets a national standard for food safety regulations and warning requirements for packaged food. Under this bill, the Food and Drug Administration will be responsible for reviewing existing state regulations that may be different from federal regulations and new regulations that states may propose.
Current laws, including the Nutrition Labeling and Education Act of 1990, the Food Quality Protection Act of 1996, the Poultry Products Inspection Act and the Meat Inspection Act all contain uniformity provisions. Providing national food safety standards and warning requirements for packaged foods will ensure that consistent, science-based standards are applied to products nation-wide, increasing consumer confidence. If a food product is safe in one state, it is safe in all states.
As food products are shipped to states across the country, consumers in every state expect that the products they buy are safe and accurately labeled. The United States has the world’s safest food supply, provided at the lowest cost to consumers. This bill builds on this record of success by extending the same approach to food safety standards and warnings. |
