Black Music Month: The Legacy Lives On

Washington, DC— June is Black Music month. We honor the legacy of music created by African Americans.  We celebrate the music from the past that continues to lend its familiar sounds of jazz, hip hop, blues, rock and roll, and rhythm and blues.  We remember those that have been recognized in the music industry for their genius as well as those whose names have been enshrined on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.  We recognize artists whose contributions have set trends in the music industry across the nation and around the world.

For the past thirty years, Black Music month has been designated to encourage  people of all backgrounds to explore the cultural diversity of Black music.  In June, we reflect on the contributions of not just singers, but composers, writers and producers.  In addition, we ruminate on the legacy that has shaped not just African American culture but music and entertainment worldwide.

The talents of African Americans is especially evident this month with the sudden passing of musical legend and icon, Michael Jackson. We lost a pioneer in music who affected generations by entertaining the world.
