Washington, D.C. – Today, U.S. Congressman Duncan Hunter (R-CA), ranking Republican on the House Armed Services Committee, welcomed the announcement by the United States Navy that the USS Carl Vinson (CVN 70) will be relocated to San Diego in early 2010.
“This is great news for San Diego,” said Congressman Hunter. “The Carl Vinson will continue our role and tradition as the premier naval base on the West coast.”
Following a thorough review of prospective homeports, the United States Navy selected San Diego as the preferred alternative for the USS Carl Vinson. In making their decision, the Navy evaluated several factors, including existing infrastructure, family support facilities and proximity to training areas.
The USS Carl Vinson, which is presently undergoing maintenance in Norfolk, Virginia, will be one of three nuclear powered aircraft carriers homeported in San Diego, alongside the USS Nimitz (CVN 68) and the USS Ronald Reagan (CVN 76).
“The Carl Vinson serves as a symbol of America’s naval and military superiority,” added Hunter. “In addition to complementing San Diego’s already extensive inventory of military assets, the Carl Vinson will serve to enhance our nation’s security by strengthening our naval presence in the Pacific.” |
