Most Americans take for granted that we have the safest food supply in the world. That's why it's so troubling when problems arise. The most recent case of food-borne illness has involved certain peanut butter products, resulting in more than 600 people becoming ill. Last summer, a batch of jalapeno peppers from Mexico was finally identified as the cause of a deadly outbreak of Samonela Saintpaul, but not before tomatoes were mistakenly blamed.
Many of our food safety regulations date back to the Eisenhower Administration: Clearly it's time to modernize. That's why I have introduced bipartisan legislation that will give the Food and Drug Administration powerful new tools to protect our food supply. These tools will enable the FDA to act faster when a problem arises, but more importantly these modernized rules will keep problems from happening in the first place.
You can learn more about this important legislation by visiting my Website www.adamputnam.house,gov and looking at the Legislative News Kit for Food Safety.
Federal Reserve Board Chairman Ben Bernanke recently testified before the Financial Services Committee on which I serve about the current state of our economy. Among other things, Chairman Bernanke discussed the root causes of the current economic situation. The Federal Reserve Board of Governors’ Monetary Policy Report to the Congress gives a thorough summary of the “Evolution of the Financial Turmoil” that we are currently experiencing.
