There is no doubt that we are facing some of the most difficult economic times in recent history.
This is especially true in Central Florida where we have seen unemployment rates double from where they were a year ago. According to the latest numbers about 10 percent of employable people in Hillsborough and Polk Counties are out of work. That's twice as high as a year ago, and it means that thousands of people need work. To help link job seekers with employers who have job openings, I am sponsoring an Education and Employment Fair in conjunction with Polk Works in Winter Haven on Thursday, April 30.
Companies that are now hiring will be taking applications. In addition, you can learn about schools and educational opportunities for developing new or improved skills that are in demand by employers.
The Education and Employment Fair Thursday, April 30, 2009 3:00 p.m. - 7:00 p.m. Nora Mayo Hall 500 3rd Street NW Winter Haven
Earlier in April I asked readers of this newsletter for their thoughts on when they expect the economy to start improving. Hundreds of people responded, and here is what they had to say:
- 8 percent: It’s already improving
- 3 percent: By this summer
- 17 percent: By the end of summer
- 26 percent: Sometime in 2010
- 45 percent: Later than 2010
Sincerely yours,
Adam H. Putnam, Member of Congress
