Washington, D.C. - U.S. Rep. Timothy V. Johnson today urged constituents to take advantage of the free government offer of coupons valued at $40 that can be used for the purchase of set-top converter boxes that will allow older analog televisions to receive digital signals.
“The broadcast industry is in the process of one of the biggest, government-mandated technological overhauls since the advent of color televisions,” Rep. Johnson said. “Most consumers will not be affected by this, but there are still tens of thousands of Illinois citizens who still rely on older televisions and do not get cable or satellite service. They are the ones for whom this program is designated.
“This transition will be here before you know it, and the broadcast industry as well as members of Congress need to do all we can to informed the public of this monumental transition,” Rep. Johnson said.
The mandated transition date is Feb. 19, 2009. Each household is eligible for up to two $40 coupons upon request that are good toward the purchase of up to two converter boxes. The cost of each box is estimated at $50-$70. A separate converter box is needed for each analog television that relies on over-the-air broadcasts. The boxes are not necessary if TVs are connected to a cable or satellite system.
The coupons are available through the National, Telecommunications and Information Administration. To obtain the coupon or obtain further information on the subject, citizens may call 1-888-DTV-2009, visit www.dtv2009.gov, or email couponinfor@ntia.doc.gov.
While a digital convert will allow people to continue to watch programming on analog sets, people will need to purchase a high-definition television to receive programming in high-definition. High definition means a clearer, higher-resolution picture, better signal reception and the opportunity for broadcasters to provide additional programming. Additionally, once the transition is complete, the vacated analog broadcast spectrum will be available for additional public safety communications and for more advanced wireless services for consumers.
The coupons are available through March, 2009.
