Pete King unbound at Dems over 9/11 billBy Maggie Haberman
July 29, 2010
I am late to this today, but Rep. Pete King is lambasting his Democratic colleagues over the currently troubled fate of the Zadroga 9/11 Health and Compensation Act, which he's worked on for years in bipartisan fashion.
It's in trouble because Democrats are requiring a two-thirds majority to pass it, saying they want to avoid having Republicans attach unwanted amendments to it.
"The Democrats could have passed this bill at any time over the past 3.5 years," King told me. "They're willing to let cops and firefighters die...and what's really frustrating is they have been trying to turn it into a partisan issue."
He added that the "two-thirds standard" is not routinely applied.
