BP Offers No Assurances to New York

New Yorkers have been watching the Gulf oil spill warily, fearing it could leak over into the loop current and ooze up the East Coast.
That possibility may not be large, but legislators have been demanding that BP and the administration make contingency plans, and today, the oil company answered that request with a letter that at least one of those lawmakers found less than convincing.
“I don’t trust them at all,” said Long Island GOP Rep. Pete King, who asked BP what its plans were in May in a letter co-signed by Island Democratic Reps. Steve Israel and Tim Bishop. “It’s basically a form letter, and it’s not reassuring at all.”
The letter basically recounts what BP is doing in the Gulf, and explains how the government is monitoring the progress of the oil, but it says nothing about what BP would do if the oil does head up the coast.
“In something like this, you have to assume the worst, or at least prepare for the worst,” King said.
