REP. RANGEL COMMENTS ON FINAL PASSAGE OF
REPUBLICAN TAX CUT BILL
I know that the Republicans are not trying to take care of the people.  Basically this is a Republican plan that came a long time ago and has very little to do with taxes.

The Republican belief is that the Federal government should not be in the business of providing services to American citizens.  Instead they believe that they should just take care of national defense, and provide wealth and protection to the investors.  And for those people that are less fortunate, they should have to rely on local and state governments. For that reason, we find this enormous increase in taxes for working people in our cities and states.

We also find our charitable organizations in trouble.  The Federal government will be providing less assistance to them in Medicaid and Medicare- even our heroic veterans coming home will find that the benefits will be sharply reduced for them.

The Republican party says ‘leave no child behind,’ take a look at the budget and see how many children and adults are left behind.  We know that some of these programs have been described as third rails and you don’t want to touch them. Leave Social Security alone.  At the end of the day you will see that you have borrowed all the money that you can and our great nation is now paying interest on the debt that you caused.

You promised tonight and many times before that you will come back again and again and each time we find ourselves in more debt. Those of us in this chamber will be o.k., but what about our children and our children’s children? What happened to the surplus we had?  How did we have such a tremendous swing from $5 trillion dollars? We had hopes and  dreams then. We could do something. What do you leave us with now?    You have left us with a deficit that goes as far as we can see, programs that we will never be able to initiate, and what will you say? You tell us that the money is just not there.

You say that this tax bill will create jobs. Why don’t we pull the record and find what you said last time you came with a trillion dollar tax bill and find out where the jobs are that you promised then?  We know that there is a philosophical difference between Democrats and Republicans.  We believe that the people should be served and not just our investor class.  Is it a class warfare?  You bet your life!  And you have declared it against the working people!
