CONGRESSMAN FATTAH HONORS COMMUNITY
LEADERS
PHILADELPHIA, PA – Recognizing their commitment to the City of
Philadelphia, three post offices were renamed this week after Freeman Hankins,
Roxanne Jones, and Max Weiner, respectively. Each of the post offices
will be located in the area where these community leaders played a major
role.
Congressman Chaka Fattah (D-PA) authored the 1999 legislation, H.R.
100, that allowed for this dedication.
On Tuesday morning, the Post Office located at 5300 West Jefferson Street,
was renamed after the former State Representative and Senator, Freeman
Hankins. This will serve to commemorate the man who was the prime sponsor
of the legislation that made Dr. Martin Luther King’s birthday a state
holiday.
Tuesday afternoon, the Post Office located at 2601 North 16th Street,
was renamed after legendary State Senator Roxane Jones. This building
will serve to honor the first African American woman elected to the Pennsylvania
State Senate.
On Wednesday morning, the Post Office located at 2037 Chestnut Street,
was renamed after the former consumer rights advocate, Max Weiner.
The man who was Pennsylvania’s version of Ralph Nader will be honored by
this establishment.
Congressman Chaka Fattah was on hand at each dedication to give remarks
on these fine individuals.
