CONGRESSMAN CHAKA FATTAH’S (D-PA)
STATEMENT ON THE
SUPREME COURT DECISION
The Supreme Court decision is out of step with the last century of
American progress,
where we have been moving to enfranchise voters. The Supreme
Court was on the
wrong side of history last night. Its decision raises questions
about America’s ability to
promote one-person-one-vote democracy abroad because we cannot even
do it here, in
America.
This remarkable process has tested the rule of law in our
country. I am proud of the
American people and their active but patient participation in this
process. The Supreme
Court’s decision not to allow the Florida vote count to proceed is
a disappointment and
leaves me concerned about the strength of some of the core principles
on which our
democracy is founded, chief among them that we are a government of
laws and not of
men. Last night, the majority of the Supreme Court took it upon
themselves to select the
next President of the United States, a choice reserved to the people.
I question how they can, on the one hand, say it is unconstitutional
to use various
methods to measure the statewide vote and then on the other hand,
allow Florida to
certify a winner, knowing Florida used assorted voting procedures to
arrive at that
conclusion.
The decision of this institution does, however, represent the highest
lawof the land. We
will abide by its decision.
