CONGRESSMAN FATTAH KEYNOTES TEMPLE
EDUCATION CONFERENCE
PHILADELPHIA, PA -- One of the nation’s top legislators in education
addressed Temple University’s College of Education’s "Education 2000: Challenge
in the New Millennium" conference today.
Congressman Chaka Fattah (D-PA), who has made a career out of championing
public education and college matriculation, will speak about the problems
and the possibilities of public education.
Congressman Fattah gained national prominence with the passage of his
GEAR UP legislation. This $200 million appropriated program will
help over one million children go on to college.
Congressman Fattah has also introduced the Equal Protection School Finance
Act. Cosponsored by over three dozen Members, the Equal Protection School
Finance Act seeks to level funding disparities created in our current system
of education school finance.
Almost 200 Members of Congress voted for Congressman Fattah’s equity
amendment last Fall.
Modeled after the Equal Protection School Finance Act, this amendment
would require states to either fund their public schools equitably or prove
that the students have equal achievement levels.
Today is Congressman Fattah’s second major university address in as
many weeks. Last Wednesday, Congressman Fattah was honored by the
Fels School of Government at the University of Pennsylvania, where he received
the first alumni achievement award.
Temple University's College of Education is ranked in the top 20 of
highly respected College's of Education by the U.S. News and World Report.
