In a free market economy such as ours, it is important that consumers have as many choices as possible. When community banks and credit unions coexist and compete, consumers win. However, we must make sure that there is a level playing field that does not favor one institution at the expense of the other.

Unfortunately, some folks don’t know when to turn their phones off. Allowing travelers to talk on their cell phones on airplanes is simply a nuisance.

The continuing repression of the religious freedom and human rights of the Baha’is in Iran is horrible. Even more shocking is the harassment Baha’i children face while at school. We must remain committed to helping those who have lived for too long under the yoke of oppression.

Because of the innovation and job creation that small businesses provide, the U.S. House of Representatives approved initiatives that I supported to help these economic drivers continue their key role in the growth of our nation. These bills are now pending approval in the U.S. Senate.

Because federal aid is a limited resource, it should be used to benefit legal citizens of the United States of America.

A House committee is investigating several charities accused of not giving enough of their contributions to the veterans they are supposed to be helping. This is indeed a serious problem and deserves close scrutiny by Congress. One of the most important responsibilities I have as a Member of the United States Congress is to ensure adequate support for and appreciation of our nation's veterans.

Listening to calls of known terrorists has played an important role in keeping Americans safe. While the Senate voted to extend the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act (FISA), House Democrats put politics above security and allowed the law that lets our intelligence community monitor calls expire.

And, as we look for ways to reign in the high cost of prescription drugs, we need to encourage competition among pharmacies.
