Winner of the 2009 Congressional Art Competition

On Saturday, May 23rd, the six finalists of the 2009 Congressional Art Competition, their families, and teachers were invited to attend a ceremony and reception in Bremerton where Congressman Dicks announced the winner and presented the finalists with certificates of recognition. GaYoung "Kate" Choi of University Place, WA won this year’s competition with her pencil and oil color drawing titled “Looking at Art.”  It features small silhouetted people gazing through a telescope at large art pencils. Kate has been offered roundtrip air transportation to Washington, D.C. to attend a ceremony unveiling the winning works of art from around the country on June 24, 2009.

Each year the United States Congress sponsors “An Artistic Discovery,” a nationwide art competition that allows high school students to showcase their artistic ability in the U.S. Capitol.  Winning works from each Congressional district are displayed for eleven months in the lower-level pedestrian entry to the U.S. Capitol building.

The finalists were Kate Choi of Curtis High School, Matthew Boyle of Bellarmine Preparatory High School, Alexander Diehl of John Sedgwick Jr. High School, JoAnn Hill of Harbor Christian High School, Jordan Hudak of Stadium High School, and David Rurik of Bellarmine Preparatory High School.
