Birmingham – Seventh District Congressman Artur Davis and Uniontown Mayor Phillip White are pleased to announce their working collaboration to advance economic development options in Uniontown through the Southeastern Cheese Factory.
Mayor White and Congressman Davis have met on numerous occasions in Washington D.C. and in the district to address economic and environmental issues regarding the Cheese Factory.
“I am pleased to work with Mayor White and the management of the Southeastern Cheese Factory to promote the factory’s efforts to expand and create new jobs in Perry County,” said Davis.
In addition, representatives from Davis’ office conducted local meetings with Mayor White, Jonathan Bonner of Sentell Engineering, who is also the Consultant Engineer for the City of Uniontown and Pat Rankin, Plant Manager of Southeastern Cheese Factory. The primary issues discussed include 1) options for effective of on-site environmental management practices for the factory and dairy, 2) strategies for communication with the Alabama Department of Environmental Management (ADEM) relating to site management and strategic planning options for funding factory expansion and new product development and 3) job creation for the cheese factory.
This collaboration recently led to an agreement with ADEM outlining acceptable environmental management strategies for disposal at the factory. This agreement will strike a balance between environmental and business concerns.
Finally, Congressman Davis and Mayor White worked together to attain technical assistance through the University of West Alabama's Regional Center for Community & Economic Development for the cheese factory’s effort to raise funds for factory expansion and new job creation.
