Aerospace industry announces rocketry contest for local students

WASHINGTON, D.C. - Today the Aerospace Industries Association (AIA) and the National Association of Rocketry (NAR) announced the beginning of the "Team America Rocketry Challenge," a year long model rocket building contest for high school students across the nation. Five winning student teams will share a prize of $50,000 in savings bonds, and their teachers' departments will share $9,000. The top 100 teams will launch their rockets and prizes will be awarded on April 23, 2003 in Northern Virginia.

Students must design, build and fly a multi-stage rocket weighing less than 3.3 pounds and carrying two raw eggs and an electronic altimeter. The goal of the flights will be to come as close as possible to 1500 feet in altitude. More information about the Challenge is available on the AIA website at www.aia-aerospace.org.
