IMMEDIATE RELEASE: OCTOBER 15, 2002 Baca, Inland Empire Delegation Work to Bring Federal Support Home
WASHINGTON, D.C. - Today Representative Joe Baca (D-Rialto) announced that the House Subcommittee on VA/HUD Appropriations has included several projects requested by Baca and other members of the Inland Empire Congressional Delegation in its final version of the VA/HUD appropriations bill. Rep. Baca, Rep. Jerry Lewis (R-Redlands), and Rep. David Dreier (R-San Dimas) requested funds for several different projects for Fiscal Year (FY) 2003 in the bill. "I'm glad to see that the Subcommittee has decided to include some of my appropriations requests in their markup of the VA/HUD appropriations bill," Baca said. "These projects are important for the continued economic development or our cities in the Inland Empire." "I want to thank my colleagues Congressman Dreier and Congressman Lewis for their leadership and hard work in bringing much needed federal support home to our area," Baca said. "It's always important when it comes to supporting the economic growth and development of our area that we put partisan politics aside and work for the benefit of our constituents." The Subcommittee included $900,000 requested by Baca and Congressman Dreier to help the city of Rancho Cucamonga build a new senior center to replace an existing structure that currently does not meet the needs of the growing number of seniors in the area. The new center will be a "one-stop" for essential health, human, and recreational senior services. The Subcommittee also included $750,000 requested by Baca and Congressman Lewis for the City of San Bernardino and San Bernardino Valley Metropolitan Water District's Urban Streams Project, also known as Lakes and Streams. The project is designed to serve as a groundwater storage system and to revitalize the urban center of San Bernardino, and is meant to control flooding and enhance the aesthetic beauty of downtown San Bernardino. Finally, the Subcommittee included $100,000 for the City of Fontana to repair, update, and expand the Central Park Baseball Tournament Complex. The money will help the city build added amenities at the complex such as a skate park, roller hockey rink, and a teen center. "A reasonable part of crime prevention and city management is providing adequate venues for child and adult entertainment," Baca said. "We must provide safe and healthy alternatives to our youth so we may prevent the temptations of crime and drugs." The Appropriations Committee has not announced when it will mark up and vote on the VA/HUD appropriations bill. However, items that are included in a House subcommittee's final version of a bill are rarely taken out or altered by a full committee vote or by amendment on the House floor. # # # |
