Baca secures Federal money for Cypress Avenue Project in Fontana WASHINGTON, D.C. - The House of Representatives approved $500,000 in Federal funds to help the City of Fontana address the urgent public safety issues raised by the Cypress Avenue Overpass when it passed the Fiscal Year 2003 Omnibus Appropriations Conference Report on Friday. The funding was requested by Representative Joe Baca (D-Rialto) during the Fiscal Year 2003 appropriations process. The City of Fontana is divided into north and south by I-10, and there are only two ways to cross I-10 for 16 miles. Baca said that the Cypress Avenue overpass is needed to address critical public safety concerns such as lack of alternate routes to cross I-10 for police, firefighting and emergency medical personnel. "When we first had the chance to take at a look at the massive Omnibus Appropriations bill, we didn't see anything for the Cypress Avenue project," Baca said. "The bill is several thousand pages an d weighs over 30 pounds on paper!" "The money was appropriated, however, and I want to thank Congressman Lewis for his hard work on the Appropriations Committee. The Cypress Avenue project is vital to improving transit, reducing congestion, and providing emergency services to our neighbors in Fontana and around the Inland Empire."
