WASHINGTON, D.C. - Representative Joe Baca (D-Rialto) will join
members of the Congressional Hispanic Caucus, the Congressional Asian
Pacific Caucus, the Congressional Black Caucus and Jewish Members of
Congress at a breakfast honoring students who are breaking down racial
barriers on Thursday, March 13, 2003, at 8:30 a.m. in B-338 Rayburn
House Office Building. The breakfast will be in honor of students
belonging to the Children of the Dream Program. The Program, sponsored
by the Anti-Defamation League, exposes teens to people who are
different from themselves, teaching them to respect the differences,
find common ground, and fight for justice and fair treatment for all.
The students are chosen from a wide variety of applicants based on an essay and interview process. The Program is designed to allow teenagers to mentor teenagers in the fight against discrimination and in building tomorrows leaders. Diverse groups of students are brought to the United States from other nations to meet and interact with students in high schools across the country. Students are encouraged to share their stories of discrimination, and to teach each other about their cultures, countries, and backgrounds. The Program also allows American students to travel to Israel to meet Jewish and Arab students in the Middle East, and encourages on-going work and dialogue between the students. Tomorrow’s breakfast event will allow members of the Congressional Asian Pacific American Caucus, the Congressional Black Caucus, the Congressional Hispanic Caucus and Jewish Legislators to meet the next generation of diverse leaders. It is a way for students to learn how Members of Congress who represent different constituents with different concerns work together as allies to pass legislation and provide support for each other’s issues.
