WASHINGTON, D.C. - Representative Joe Baca (D-Rialto) will be
participating two events this weekend honoring the life and work of
labor leader Cesar E. Chavez, whose birthday is March 31. The first is
a memorial breakfast on Friday, March 28 at 7:00 a.m. sponsored by
ICHR that will be held at Gents Community Center, which is near San
Bernardino Airport. The second is the Third Annual Prayer Breakfast on
Saturday, March 29 at 8:00 a.m. at Rancho Verde Country Club sponsored
by the Rialto Chapter of the Mexican American Political Association (MAPA).
The Prayer Breakfast will feature Maria Martinez, MAPA National President, and music by Mariachi Estudiantes del Inland Empire. Baca has introduced legislation that proposes the establishment and observation of a public holiday in honor of Chavez. It states that either Congress should amend the law to include a holiday in honor of Chavez, or the President should establish the holiday by executive order. The resolution also encourages public schools across the nation to teach students about the non violent philosophy and struggles of Cesar Chavez and his importance in American History. "Cesar gave Latinos in this country a voice when we had none," Baca said. "He touched the lives of millions with his nonviolent struggle for justice, education, and equality." "He was a beacon of hope for Latinos."
