WASHINGTON, D.C. – Representative Joe Baca (D-Rialto) was appointed yesterday to the Democratic Caucus Task Force on Homeland Security in the House of Representatives. Baca commented that he is looking forward to working hard on the task force since he is growing increasingly concerned over the Bush Administration’s treatment of Homeland Security “The Administration has been reluctant to fully fund the department of Homeland Security and that alarms me,” Baca said. “By being a part of this task force I will have the opportunity to take a closer look at what Congress and the Administration should really be doing to protect this nation.” The task force plans to focus on community preparation and technology implementation as part of its homeland security agenda. Democrats have criticized the President for his homeland security strategy saying that many airports are failing to implement proper cargo screening systems to protect passenger planes and over 600,000 airport employees are still not subjected to security screening. “We need to ensure that we are deploying the necessary technology to prevent terrorist attacks. Our communities need to be prepared so that we can save as many lives as possible if there is an attack,” Baca said. Also, agenda worthy according to caucus members are issues relating to water supply security, immigration procedures, and first responders funding. Baca said that he looks forward to addressing all of these crucial security issues. “I am concerned that many immigration policies are going to be put in place by the Administration that will keep hard working people out of this country,” Baca said. “The Administration needs to know that all immigrants are not terrorists.” “I hear the President saying that we need to strengthen our first responders system, but I don’t see any additional funding going towards the police and fire departments,” Baca said. “We must make sure that there is adequate funding so the police and fire departments can do there job in case of an attack.” “I believe that we could be doing more to be prepared. We must place a high priority on security for all Americans, not tax cuts for the wealthy,” Baca said. Democratic Caucus Chair Robert Menendez (D-NJ) recommended Baca for appointment to the task force. Carolyn Maloney (D-NY) currently serves as task force chairman. ###
