WASHINGTON, D.C. – Representative Joe Baca (D-Rialto) yesterday for the
second time in three years took home the coveted most valuable player
award in the 42nd annual Congressional Democrats v. Republicans charity
baseball game.
Baca had a sensational outing by going two for three at the plate with a dazzling display of defensive showmanship at 3rd base. During Baca’s first at bat, the former semi-pro player managed to connect with a low fastball, driving it like a bullet to the warning track in left field. The GOP left fielder managed to come up with the ball but not before the crowd came to its feet anticipating a fence clearing home run. Baca still received an enthusiastic ovation from the Democrats, appropriately seated in the stands to the left of home plate. Baca’s next two at bats would prove to be more fruitful and exciting, driving in a sharp single between third and short and scoring a run. In all, Baca came away from the night with two singles, one RBI, and many accolades from teammates for starting a rally late in the game that nearly revived the Dems from a 5-1 deficit. The Democrats loaded the bases at the bottom of the last inning, but left men stranded as the game came to close with a score of 5-3. “We put up a tough fight and we are going to get them next year,” Baca said. “I think tonight we proved, that whether it is on the field or in the House, when the chips are down, Democrats don’t give up. We fight to the bitter end.” This year’s game saw more than 60 Members of Congress raising funds to help the Washington Literacy Council, the Little League Baseball program of the Police Boys and Girls Club of Washington, and local charities selected by the Bowie Baysox. This is Baca’s third time participating. # # # |
